Holed up at home working

Home work station

The INQUIRER.net office, on Mola Street in Makati, is so near to where I live — a quick walk of two blocks — that I’ve never taken the option allowed by management, under certain conditions, to work from home.

Rain or shine, holiday or regular working day, I preferred the ritual of walking to the office and on the way grabbing some take-out food to eat at my work station as I started my 4 p.m.-to-1 a.m. shift.

From nearby stores, I would usually pick up any of the following — a dozen pork-shrimp siomai from Hen Lin or a Cheesy Beef Pinatubo from Jamaican Pattie or a spicy beef doner with cheese from Turks or a Baecon Ko burger from Frappe Connection or a two-piece fried chicken with Yangchao fried rice or panic canton from MarJim’s Chicken Corner — or in a rush, even some random items from 7-Eleven.

And after work, I would usually pop in at  Z Bar, just a few blocks from the office, for few beers — that is, if I get off work before the 4 a.m. closing time. Otherwise, I would walk a few more blocks down Kamagong Street to Tapadera, a 24-hour watering hole (except on Saturdays and Sundays when it’s closed).

Anyway. I wasn’t trying to impress the bosses with my insistence on being at the office. I was merely avoiding the obvious domestic distractions, which for me were mainly a bed beckoning for me to take a nap, which could easily stretch out to two hours, and a guitar teasing me into trying out a song I had just learned from a YouTube tutorial as if the other internet click-bait distractions weren’t enough.

A slow news day

Some people think journalists are cops. And I can’t say I blame them because some reporters on the crime beat get confused sometimes as to which side of the police line they’re supposed to be.

Sometimes people would come up to me, on learning what I do for living, and see if I could help get the rusty wheels of justice rolling for their particular predicament, just by writing about it.

Sometimes, they’d have a valid issue, which usually means it’s one that could be of interest to the public.

But sometimes…

I love this job

A full-time editor usually earns more than a full-time writer. But after letting go as a full-time editor, which I had been for quite some time, I’m rediscovering how much more I love to write.

It’s why I got into this line of work in the first place. It’s just me and a blank screen to fill with words — before any reader gets into the picture.

World Press Freedom Day

World Press Freedom Bar performance

On the invitation of Joe Torres, the NUJP chairman, Neil Doloricon and I did two songs at Freedom Bar last Saturday (May 3). So with just a quick one-hour rehearsal, we did two songs. Neil sang CSNY’s “Long Time Gone” and I sang the Eraserheads’ “Ang Huling El Bimbo.”

I didn’t realize while on stage that LeAnne had been taking pictures, one of which appears here. And I guess Joe was taking a video of all the performers, but I haven’t seen it.

After that gig, at around midnight, I went over to Ten 02, a new bar owned by Myra Ruaro, who also goes by stage name Skarlet. It’s where I hang out a lot now after work. And Myra is usually there to chat with customers.

New job at GMANews.tv

After a traumatic stint as editor of four girlie mags late last year, I decided to try my hand playing bass guitar. A pianist friend who plays at Newsdesk, a bar I hang out in, talked me into buying a bass guitar.

New line of work at ABC 5

It’s a bit of a leap from print to television journalism. I’ve been in print media for 18 years, since March 1986, before I got a job as a segment producer for Secrets, a new show hosted by Juliana Palermo over at ABC 5.
