Taking on Java

In the course of downloading a lot of freeware, I stumbled on so many software developers’ sites that I became interested in programming. So now I’m studying Java and doing some C++ reading at the same time.

I downloaded and tried out tons of software, including the latest Java SDK, and for awhile, I had that huge and lumbering NetBeans IDE in my machine. At the moment, I’m at the stage where I'm content fiddling about with Crimson Editor and JCreator LE.

My wife just keeps mum whenever I mention anything about Java, but she did buy me two books, the huge Java 2, J2SE 1.4 Complete (Sybex) and The C++ Programming Language (3rd Edition) by Bjarne Stroustrup, the C++ inventor himself.

So here I am at 42, trying to get into a new field. If I hope to stay around until past 80, that should give me something to do.
