Orphaned

My father died within the first hour of Tuesday, July 4, Independence Day in the US (and also in the Philippines until President Diosdado Macapagal moved it to June 12).

Papa's death — he had a heart attack — was sudden, unexpected, even if he had been in precarious health for years because of emphysema. 

We buried him last Sunday, July 9. That makes me an orphan, my mother having died two years ago, on Sept. 5, 2004, due to a heart aneurysm.
